The European Commission has launched an official investigation into AliExpress, an international e-commerce website run by the Chinese technology giant Alibaba.
It is reported that pornographic and other illegal content is allegedly distributed on AliExpress. This points to potential problems with moderation, which has very strict requirements in the EU’s new Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force this month.
Previously, EU warnings about moderation issues were sent to Meta, while X and TikTok received their own investigations. If a violation is confirmed, companies can impose a fine of up to 6% of the global annual turnover.
CNBC notes that in addition, the commission will check whether AliExpress complied with its own terms of service — regarding the prohibition of health-risk products or counterfeit drugs.
In total, the list of “very large platforms” (with more than 45 million users) subject to DSA regulation includes 19 platforms — AliExpress, Amazon, AppStore, Bing, Booking.com, Facebook, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Search, Shopping Google, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tik Tok, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube and Zalando.
