Musk admitted last year that he had been prescribed ketamine for treatment and said he takes the drug “intermittently” — moments when he experiences “chemical surges” that can cause depression.
In a new interview, the billionaire added that taking ketamine eases his periods of bad mood, and this is in the interests of investors in Tesla and other companies he manages.
“The most important thing for Wall Street is the execution of duties,” Elon said in an interview with ex-CNN host Don Lemon (via Bloomberg). “From the perspective of investors, if I start something, I have to continue it.”
Ketamine can actually be prescribed to patients to treat pain and depression, and in high doses, the drug acts as a sedative. Although it can also cause hallucinations, and an overdose will most often result in unconsciousness and slowed breathing, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
In January, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the boards of Tesla and SpaceX were concerned that Musk was using recreational drugs.
“After that one puff with Rogan, I agreed to NASA’s request for 3 years of random drug testing. Not even traces of any drugs or alcohol were found,” Musk wrote on X at the time.
Meanwhile, Lemon’s interview with Musk never aired on X (and is now on YouTube). The journalist said that Elon allegedly did not like his questions (including those related to the use of ketamine), and the billionaire himself wrote that he was dissatisfied with Lemon’s approach.
