Demand falls and stocks rise. Sony has stopped production of the PS VR2

A month ago, Sony announced PS VR2 compatibility with PC, which should appear already this year and become a lifeline for the semi-failed VR headset. Following on from Bloomberg’s story, citing informed sources, Sony has been forced to halt production of the PS VR2 as demand continues to dwindle and inventory levels rise.

There is absolutely no need for additional PS VR2 shipments until Sony sells out of existing stock of the devices. Bloomberg’s sources did not provide specifics on the accumulated volume of the product, only saying that Sony has shipped more than 2 million PS VR2 headsets to the market since its release in February 2023.

According to IDC, PSVR2 sales have declined every quarter since its debut. At the same time, analysts predict a further revival of demand for VR headsets thanks to Apple, which recently entered this market with the high-profile Vision Pro. According to IDC, the VR market will grow at an average annual rate of 31.5% between 2023 and 2028.

Sony did not respond to Bloomberg’s inquiry and has not yet commented on reports of a decline in PS VR2 sales.

As a reminder, PS VR2 went on sale in February 2023 at a price of $550. And the rather high price became one of the factors that restrained the sale of the headset. Another important factor is a fairly narrow selection of games. There are currently around 160 games available on the PS VR2, so PC compatibility should help expand the game library and the appeal of the headset itself. It remains to be mentioned that the recent restructuring of the business and mass cuts hit many projects – the London studio PlayStation Studios, which worked on VR games, ceased to exist. Even the holy Guerrilla Games, which developed the exclusive Horizon Call of the Mountain in the popular Horizon series, did not miss the cuts.
