₴33.5 billion in revenue, loss of users after a cyber attack and 4G for 60% of subscribers

The largest mobile operator in Ukraine has released financial data for 2023 — and separately for the 4th quarter, which was marked by a drop in revenue and an outflow of subscribers after a large-scale December cyber attack.

Key figures for 2023 in general:

  • Kyivstar’s operating income amounted to ₴33.5 billion — an increase of 8% compared to the previous year.
  • EBITDA indicatorEBITDA — operating profit excluding interest on loans, taxes, depreciation and amortization — is more than 19.7 billion (against 18.3 billion in 2022 — an increase of 8.1%).
  • Capital investments – ₴6.364 billion (an increase of 6% compared to 2022), which became the largest sum of expenses for the operator in the last 3 years.
  • Payment of taxes and fees – ₴10.8 billion.

Financial indicators of the 4th quarter were marked by the impact of the December cyberattack on Kyivstar. The company canceled one fee for the tariff for all mobile and fixed line users.

Income in the specified period decreased by 3.3% to ₴7.9 billion compared to the same period in 2022. Also, in the 4th quarter, the number of subscribers decreased by 3.4% to 23.9 million (compared to the same period last year). At the same time, in the operator’s press service, this is explained by the “influence of war factors” – for example, the migration of the population outside the country and the occupation of a number of settlements.

Restoration and modernization of communication

The report notes that last year “Kyivstar” restored communication in 190 settlements where more than 112,000 people live and built 1,000 new base stations for the 4G network. Another 4,000 base stations were modernized in order to increase the speed of mobile Internet. Currently, the operator’s 4G network covers the territory where 95% of the population of Ukraine lives, and about 60% of “Kyivstar” subscribers receive services in the 4G network.

In the 4th quarter of 2023, Kyivstar subscribers used mobile internet by 9.6% more than in the corresponding period of 2022. The number of subscribers using high-speed mobile Internet increased by 8.8% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, to 14.3 million users.

The operator also continues to support important social projects, such as the provision of protective equipment for engineering and sapper groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the purchase of medical equipment for the treatment of people with severe burns, connecting shelters to the Internet, etc.
