Tesla is stepping up its push for driver assistance technologies. Now, company employees in North America must install and demonstrate the relevant technology before delivering the cars to customers. It’s a “tough requirement” that Elon Musk says will slow down supply. At the same time, it can increase the company’s earnings for constant sales volumes.
Musk instructed employees to conduct a “short test drive” with customers to demonstrate the system, which Tesla is promoting as Full Self-Driving. This is evidenced by an internal memo seen by Bloomberg. Workers will also have to inspect any cars returned from service.
“I know it will slow down the delivery process, but it’s a tough requirement,” Musk said, pointing to a lack of awareness of Tesla’s system capabilities. “It is very important”.
In the memo, Musk also stated that “almost no one really understands how well (supervised) FSD actually works.”
The move could encourage buyers of custom-made Full Self-Driving cars. Tesla is currently selling this option at a price of $12,000. In marketing materials, the company promises that “your car will be able to drive itself almost anywhere with minimal driver intervention and will be constantly improving.”
Tesla and Musk did not comment on this information.
