The head of Meta is looking for talent in the field of artificial intelligence.

Mark Zuckerberg is writing personal emails to AI experts at Google DeepMind to lure them to Meta, The Information reports, citing two people who have seen the messages.

One of the interviewees said that Zuckerberg wrote to the researchers that artificial intelligence was very important to Meta and expressed the hope that they would join the company. Additionally, some candidates were offered jobs without interviews.

The aggressive recruiting effort appears to be part of a concerted strategy to turn Meta into a dominant AI player. In January, Zuckerberg said that the company plans to have more than 340,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by the end of 2024 (according to Raymond James analysts, Nvidia sells H100 chips for $25,000 to $30,000, and on eBay if Meta paid the minimum, it would have spent b for it is about $9 billion), and also that Meta’s computing infrastructure will contain “almost 600,000 H100 computing equivalents, if other GPUs are included.”

Meta is also looking to differentiate itself from competitors such as OpenAI with its open-source approach — the company released a public version of its large language model Llama 2 in July.

“In terms of investment priorities, artificial intelligence will be our biggest investment area in 2024 for both engineering and computing,” Zuckerberg told investors on an earnings call last year.
