Musk says Tesla’s Optimus robot should cost “half the price of a car” – and will soon support 5G

Musk says the Tesla Optimus robot should cost money

It’s been a little over two years since Elon Musk announced that Tesla was moving toward the development of humanoid robots. The company quickly showed the first prototypes (one assembled model that barely moved, and another that stood on a stand and waved to the audience), and then the second generation of robots, which received some important improvements and caused more credibility to the project.

In a previous update, Tesla’s CEO said the Optimus was “extremely undervalued” and predicted demand to reach 10-20 billion units. Musk also stated that humanoid robots will represent “a large part of Tesla’s long-term value” and will be present in every home in the future to perform production and service tasks.

For the billionaire’s predictions to work, the price must be acceptable. Musk previously talked about $40,000 per unit, but according to a recent comment in X, he’s now looking at a much lower price, which would be less than half the cost of the car.

In another update, it is reported that the Optimus, along with Tesla’s electric cars, will receive a “5G network” connection.

The automaker has long provided its vehicles with the Internet – in this way, Tesla updates the software and collects some data. The company started with 3G and 4G LTE, however, judging by the description of the new vacancy, it plans to switch to 5G.

The requirements are detailed in the job description reviewed by Electrek:

“Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Cellular Integration Engineer for the global IT Manufacturing Solutions Engineering team to deliver a best-in-class connectivity experience for all Tesla vehicles (Model S 3 XY, Cybertruck…) and Optimus at Tesla facilities. The role involves understanding internal customer requirements, planning and executing test procedures, smooth implementation of ESIM and reliable integration into Tesla’s private 5G network infrastructure.”
