Google has introduced a version of Chrome for Windows laptops running on Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. According to statements from two unnamed partner companies, the version of Chrome for Snapdragon shows “significant performance improvements”. The new version of Chrome is now available for download.

While there are already Snapdragon-powered Windows laptops available for purchase, today’s announcement mostly paves the way for upcoming Snapdragon X Elite devices. Qualcomm says the chip will significantly outpace the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 lineup. But if one of the earlier Snapdragon computers is available, the new Chrome will work there, too.

Google sees the companies’ long history of working together on Android as an advantage as Qualcomm encroaches on Intel in the PC market. “Our close collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies will help ensure that Chrome users have a better web browsing experience on ARM-compatible PCs,” Google senior vice president Hiroshi Lockheimer wrote in a company press release.

The release of the first laptops with Snapdragon X Elite is planned for the middle of this year. The chip is equipped with 12 Oryon cores and, according to Qualcomm, has twice the performance of an Intel Core i7-1360P or i7-1355U – while consuming 68% less power. The chip is made on a 4 nm process from TSMC. Its clock speed ranges from 38 GHz with a dual-core boost of up to 43 GHz. Qualcomm claims that most Windows games will run on it at near full speed without the need to tweak code or change resources.

While Intel is Qualcomm’s direct competitor on the Windows platform, it’s also trying to match or beat Apple’s M-series processors. Qualcomm’s job is to do that on different hardware from different companies, which Apple doesn’t have to worry about.

2024 may be the year Arm processor architecture “displaces” x86 thanks to a new Qualcomm chip and new Windows builds
