The trend is that the IT sphere in Ukraine is coming to its end and will become a kind of specific niche. PHP-Developer Bohdan Semesko thinks so. With the author’s permission, we publish below his perspective on the current realities of IT hiring.
Briefly about the Ukrainian IT sphere in 2024
- It used to be 45-100 applications for one Middle developer vacancy. The competition is quite strong, the unemployment rate is high, the search for a job, as some colleagues say, takes 1-6 months. Many strong professionals were dismissed, many had their income cut.
- This is when you can be fired at the HR screening stage simply because you did not like your appearance (for example, the hairstyle is not the same or the blouse is not the right tailoring).
- Most of the submitted applications will be ignored altogether, without an answer even in a month.
- Those jobs that have been offered to you by yourself may also be stagnant.
- Most of the jobs on the Web are Crypto and iGaming, i.e. gambling scams. Those people who, in principle, did not consider such niches, now have to go against themselves and their ideology, because there is no other work Of course, this greatly affected the level of salaries, because the market fell, and now they are ready to sell their conscience for a notional $ 1000. This is not to mention the usual slave contracts in this niche.
What is positive?
- The Ukrainian product is holding on a little longer.
- Various financial companies, auto parts sales portal, B2B products, etc.
- Large outsourced companies are somehow holding on for a little while longer.
There are many reasons why this happened. Starting with the banal oversaturation of the market of niche developers after courses that have moved from other types of activity. Finishing various US crises, the use of frankly controversial laws that hit the budgets of medium and small companies.
And even a simple drop in the reputation of Ukraine in the world from 2023, when all those foreigners who shouted Support for Ukraine in 2022, already started writing and saying that Ukraine is a corrupt state with no prospect of winning the war.
The bubble that once existed has burst. Unfortunately, the trend is such that the IT sphere in Ukraine is coming to its final end, it will become a kind of specific niche.
Where they go not for money, but for the calling of the soul. On a par with teaching, jurisprudence and other fields.
All the cool specialists will sit in those few Ukrainian products, some of them will develop new products, some will go to direct contracts bypassing outsourcing.
The rest, less active specialists, realizing that there is nothing to catch here, there will be no career growth, except for increased responsibilities, tension and stress, will leave the field to seek their happiness elsewhere.
