Not just Bing: Microsoft is trying to integrate OpenAI's GPT language model with Word, Outlook and PowerPoint

Microsoft has already included an unknown version of GPT in Word’s AutoComplete feature and is working on further integration of the language model in PowerPoint and Outlook.

In Outlook, AI technology can improve search results without the need to use keywords in emails. Microsoft has explored how AI models suggest responses to emails or recommend changes to Word documents. (Imagine Outlook writing an email to your boss explaining that you are sick).

Microsoft also plans to launch a version of Bing that will use ChatGPT to answer search queries — the OpenAI chatbot could provide “human answers” to questions rather than just links to information.

However, the implementation of AI functions can cause a number of problems for Microsoft – and the main one is that the information provided by the language model is not always true.

Another serious obstacle is privacy. Microsoft needs to customize models for individual users without compromising their data. The company is already working on privacy-preserving models using GPT-3 and the not-yet-released GPT-4.

Microsoft can use these models to collect and summarize information from Teams meeting transcripts and then add images generated by DALL-E 2 to a PowerPoint presentation. The researchers have already presented their Office integration work to Microsoft’s CEO, but it is unclear when or if these GPT-based or DALL-E 2-based models will be available in Office products.

Microsoft already uses AI features in its applications to improve productivity:

  • Word and PowerPoint automatically suggest captions for images and slides using artificial intelligence algorithms;
  • Microsoft Teams uses artificial intelligence to improve echoes, pauses and acoustics;
  • Microsoft Editor improves your writing by using AI to check spelling, grammar and “prediction” text;
  • Two years ago, Microsoft also created AI-powered code completion using GPT-3.

Microsoft Corporation has a close relationship with OpenAI, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies. The Redmond-based tech giant adds an artificial intelligence model to transform Bing image text based on OpenAI’s DALL-E 2; invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019; and has an exclusive license to use the GPT-3 AI text generator.

“Artificial intelligence is going to reinvent everything you do in Windows,” said Panos Panai, Microsoft’s head of Windows and Surface, speaking at CES last week.

If Microsoft continues to release GPT-based versions of Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, it will mean rapid commercialization of OpenAI’s GPT models. Bing will join PowerApps (the first commercial use of Microsoft GPT) in March 2023.

The integration of OpenAI language models into Office and Bing will also put a lot of pressure on Google, which dominates the search engine and promotes its own Workspace tools for businesses.

ChatGPT was previously banned in New York schools. Teachers do not distinguish between chatbot texts and works written by students.
