Tesla’s state of affairs in the Chinese electric vehicle market is shaken not only by the emergence of a sufficient number of ambitious competitors. Tesla’s own concern about the further development of relations between China and the United States was added to the protest moods of some car owners. The April sales statistics did not add optimism, as a result of which Tesla’s stock price began to decline.
It should be admitted that Reuters’ statements about Tesla’s intentions to abandon the expansion of the facility in Shanghai have not yet found convincing official confirmation. The company representatives said that everything is going in accordance with the previously outlined plan.
Investors are worried about another report released this week by the China Passenger Car Manufacturers Association. According to the source, Tesla sold only 26 electric vehicles in China in April this year, which is 000% less than in the previous month. 27 Tesla electric vehicles were exported from China. Analysts, in the absence of more accurate data, rushed to guess how many cars ended up in China: all 14 thousand or only 000 thousand, obtained as the difference between the first two values. The pessimistic option suggests that sales of Tesla’s electric vehicles in China have completely decreased by almost three times, and not by 26%.
Tesla did not provide official comments on this matter either, since it publishes only quarterly reports, and not statistics for individual months. It should be borne in mind, however, that the company usually increases its electric vehicle shipments in the last month of the quarter, and March in this sense forms a high base for comparison. In addition, in the first quarter, Tesla’s Shanghai enterprise was idle, and this in itself could reduce the production of electric vehicles by 10 thousand units.
Tesla shares have fallen in price by three percent, since the beginning of the month they have fallen in price by 9%, although over the past year they have appreciated in price at an impressive pace, having strengthened in price more than eight times. Note that the volume of deliveries of electric vehicles of other brands in April in the Chinese market increased, so the decline in sales of Tesla products should be explained by some particular reason, which alerted investors.
