Sega Senior Strategy and Development Manager Shuji Utsumi recently spoke to Famitsu about the global success of the crime RPG Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Recall that on the territory of its native Japanese region, Yakuza: Like a Dragon started as an exclusive PS4, and reached the western audience as a multi-platform project – for the first time in the history of the series.
According to Utsumi, Yakuza: Like a Dragon has received a lot of accolades outside of Japan and has even earned itself the title of the most successful game in the franchise globally.
Utsumi did not share specific data, but in the third quarter of the fiscal year ended March 31, Yakuza: Like a Dragon (along with the remaster Shin Megami Tensei III) helped Sega achieve “Strong indicators”.
Earlier it was reported that over 400 thousand copies of Yakuza: Like a Dragon were sold in Japan in the first month and a half since its release, and for the first time the game even outpaced Yakuza 6: The Song of Life and Yakuza 0 in terms of sales in its home market.
Yakuza’s popularity is further boosted by series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, who stepped down as Sega’s chief creative officer at the end of January to focus on development.
Earlier, Sega announced its intention to release its games simultaneously worldwide, starting with the detective action Lost Judgment. The project will debut on September 24 this year on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S.
