These plans were announced by Air Force Chief of Staff, General Charles Brown. The Air Force currently has six types of fighters: F-22 Raptor, F-15C / D Eagle, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15EX, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
As for the F-22 specifically, the US Air Force has 186 of them. Aircraft are on average 12 years old. However, they have many technical problems, so the combat readiness of these fighters cannot be called high.
It is worth noting that the new idea has critics. They say that it is unacceptable to reduce the fleet of combat aircraft. It is possible that the F-22 will be replaced by some other aircraft.
