Iran launches Simurgh, its most powerful supercomputer

The most powerful computer complex in the country was put into operation in Iran: the system was named Simurgh – in honor of a fantastic creature in Iranian mythology, the king of all birds. The supercomputer was developed by specialists from the Amirkabir University of Technology. The system was assembled at the Iranian High Performance Computing Research Center (IHPCRC).

At the present time, the speed of the complex is 0,56 petaflops. In the future, the power of the supercomputer is planned to be increased to 1 petaflops – it will take about two months to finalize the system. The configuration of the supercomputer has not been disclosed, and its appearance in public performance ratings is hardly to be expected.

The new supercomputer is about 100 times more powerful than the high-performance computing systems used in Iran so far, officials said. The system will be used for tasks in the field of genetics, Big Data, AI, the Internet of things, and so on. Part of the capacity will be allocated to cloud systems.

Internet sources point out that Simurgh, apparently, was built using components purchased on the black market, since Iran officially cannot buy many modern technologies due to sanctions – a few years ago ZTE received a large fine due to illegal supplies equipment to the country. Nevertheless, Iran occasionally manages to obtain the necessary components: at the beginning of the century, a cluster of Pentium III / IV was built, and in 2007 a supercomputer based on AMD Opteron was built.
