Briefly about the work of scientists tells the edition of Naked Science. Researchers have found that the brain of these insects consists of approximately 200 neurons and other cells. In humans, for example, there are 86 billion neurons in the brain. Of course, these are incomparable numbers, but for mosquitoes and fruit flies, even 200 thousand is a lot.
The number of cells, by the way, was counted using an isotropic fractionator. To do this, scientists had to destroy the brain of insects.
To be more precise, at the front sight Drosophila melanogaster there were about 199 brain cells. In three species of mosquitoes, 380, 217 and 223 thousand cells were counted.
Scientists concluded that science may have underestimated the intelligence of mosquitoes and fruit flies.
