A visitor to the Reddit forum under the pseudonym pmartinez527 did an interesting research. He compared versions of the same games for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Thanks to this, the enthusiast found out that on the Sony console projects take up 20-55% less space than on the Microsoft console.
It is important to note that pmartinez527 did not consider projects that are available for backward compatibility. He took versions of games specially made for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The results of the research are shown below:
- Control: 25,7GB on PS5 and 43,6GB on Xbox Series X
- Hitman 3: 61,9GB on PS5 and 77,8GB on Xbox Series X
- Subnautica: 3,8GB on PS5 and 8,3GB on Xbox Series X
- Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time: 20GB on PS5 and 28GB on Xbox Series X
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2: 23,3GB on PS5 and 31,9GB on Xbox Series X
- Marvel’s Avengers: 74,1GB on PS5 and 116,6GB on Xbox Series X
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: 41,8GB on PS5 and 72,5GB on Xbox Series X
- Watch Dogs Legion: 50,6GB on PS5 and 61,1GB on Xbox Series X
- Immortals Fenyx Rising: 22,3GB on PS5 and 32,9GB on Xbox Series X
- Borderlands 3: 51,1GB on PS5 and 63,8GB on Xbox Series X
- Dirt 5: 50,9GB on PS5 and 63,3GB on Xbox Series X
- Mortal Shell: 4,6GB on PS5 and 8,6GB on Xbox Series X.
What is the reason for this difference is not known exactly. Most likely, the matter is in the hardware features of the PlayStation 5, allowing the SSD to provide linear speed of 5,5 GB / s when transferring data and up to 8-9 GB / s when working with compressed data. This allows developers to save on streaming resources. For Xbox Series X, these figures are 2,4 GB / s and 4,8 GB / s, respectively.
