In March of this year, Meta was blocked in Russia for ignoring extremist statements against Russians. The world-famous and popular social networks Facebook and Instagram were banned, which hit both ordinary Russians and bloggers, some of whom lost their main income. Today, the Council of Bloggers under the Federation Council turned to Vladimir Putin through Dmitry Medvedev with a request to lift the ban on the social networks mentioned above in Russia.
According to the signatories of the appeal, Facebook and Instagram are a platform for promoting Russia’s interests in the context of the information war, which domestic social networks cannot replace, and they are also “an effective channel for forming a positive image of Russia.” In addition, the Security Council points out the problem of protecting personal data when using VPN services, and also emphasizes the benefits of these resources for charity.
According to a source citing a representative of Dmitry Medvedev, the letter from the Council of Bloggers has not yet been received. But the Federation Council said that the Council of Bloggers does not exist, and Valeria Rytvinova, who is one of the initiators of the letter to Putin, was expelled from the experts at the Federation Council for systematic violation of the regulations and statements on behalf of the “non-existent” council of bloggers. In this regard, we can say that the initiative is unlikely to receive a legislative response, so Facebook and Instagram will remain banned.
