The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed that several investigations are currently underway into TikTok. The investigation is looking into the transfer of EU citizens’ data to China and the use of targeted advertising aimed at minors. Investigators are looking to make sure TikTok complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
“TikTok’s data processing practices, including with respect to international data transfers, are the subject of several ongoing investigations,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a letter made public by Brendan Carr, a member of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). — “This includes an investigation of the Irish. [Комиссией по защите данных] regarding TikTok’s compliance with a number of GDPR requirements, including data transfers to China and the processing of minors’ data, as well as legal proceedings in Dutch courts (in particular regarding targeted advertising to minors) and data transfers to China).”

Von der Leyen was responding to concerns raised by members of the European Parliament that Chinese authorities could potentially gain access to EU citizens’ data on TikTok. In-app data practices have been in the EU’s spotlight for some time. Earlier this year, TikTok agreed to enforce certain advertising and content policies following a complaint accusing the app of breaching EU rules.

TikTok is also under fire on the other side of the Atlantic for its privacy and security practices. Last month, TikTok denied allegations that Chinese employees of parent company ByteDance planned to track the location of some US citizens through the app.
TikTok moved user data from the US to Oracle data centers in the country in an attempt to resolve the situation. In August, Oracle audited TikTok’s content moderation and algorithms to ensure they were not susceptible to manipulation by China.
Carr previously said that TikTok should be banned in the US and called on Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores.
