According to informed sources, Microsoft has granted Sony the right to distribute Call of Duty series games through PlayStation Plus subscription. The offer to place the franchise on a rival subscription service is the latest in a long line of concessions to reach a deal to complete its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Bloomberg describes the proposal as an attempt to convince the Federal Trade Commission to allow the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The amount of the agreement between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard is $68.7 billion. Moreover, the FTC is trying to block this agreement through the court.
It will be recalled that earlier, in an attempt to soften the position of the competitor and regulatory authorities, Microsoft promised to release Call of Duty games on Nintendo and PlayStation for at least 10 years after the merger with Activision Blizzard. However, Sony actively resisted such a deal, involving regulatory bodies in the fight.
Microsoft’s offer to make Call of Duty available through PS Plus is an attempt to convince regulators around the world that its acquisition of Activision Blizzard will not affect competition in the gaming industry. Call of Duty has been a bestseller for years.
