Before you is an interesting adventure from the history of space exploration and future life on the Red Planet. The author also talks about the achievements of private space companies, praising them for a huge leap forward compared to various government competitors, including NASA.
No less important component of the book turned out to be detailed answers to the most popular questions about Mars and its colonization: what is needed to survive, how to solve problems with water and oxygen production, how to provide people with food, clothing, heat and electricity. Petranek shares plans for the economy of Mars, specifies various aspects of life on the planet, tells how to make Mars look like Earth.

The author is sure that humanity will end up on Mars in the next ten years for us. But there are already some flaws in his plans and stories about the future. They are not the author’s fault, but the time itself. The book was published in 2014, and translated by the Vivat publishing house in 2018. Therefore, we have already seen what the author only predicts, for example, the first human flight into space using rockets and the SpaceX ship.
Some particularly important things for the colonization of Mars did not happen, but they received a lot of attention. So Petranek really believed in Mars One, a private project of the Dutch researcher Bas Lansdorp, who planned to create a Martian colony. Most likely, no one will fly to Mars as part of these plans, because the company was declared bankrupt in 2019.
“How we will live on Mars” is a thin little book of 128 pages. The publication is part of the TED Books series, it has a soft cover, thick yellow pages that are pleasant to the touch.
The font is quite small, but readable without problems. The writing style is as easy and accessible as possible. There is a lot of terminology, but it is constantly explained and almost all of it is known to everyone who is interested in the topic.
The book is based on the author’s speech on the TED platform. The science fiction series “Mars” was filmed based on her motives. It has two seasons and aired on the National Geographic Channel.
Stephen Petranek himself is a famous American writer and currently the editor of Breakthrough Technology Alert magazine. He previously wrote and edited for Discover and The Washington Post. He was also the senior editor of the science department of Life magazine.
As the publication writes, “TED books are small in format, but they are devoted to big ideas.” How We’ll Live on Mars really ends in a few hours. Of the aforementioned 128 pages, only 87 have text. For everyone else, they made a big interesting program with various photos of space and Mars, pictures from the past and the future.
Pros:
small format, written interestingly and concisely, there are good photos and pictures on a certain topic, stylish publication with pleasant to the touch yellow pages, good price
Cons:
some facts and expectations from the book are already outdated, the small format of the publication will not suit readers who are used to delving deeper into the topic
Conclusion:
“How we will live on Mars” is a small but very interesting book about the exploration of Mars. The author talks about the great work of private space companies, gives detailed answers to the most popular questions about Mars and its colonization, and also strongly believes in the fast life of people on the Red Planet. He infects readers with this idea so much that by the end of the book, perhaps even the staunchest opponent of such an assumption will believe it. It should also be understood that the book was published in 2014, so some moments and hopes of the author described here have already come true or not, and the reader knows more about this than the author. Despite this, “How we will live on Mars” can be recommended to anyone who is interested in Mars, its colonization or just loves space and popular science books
