According to Windows Central, there’s no point in waiting for a foldable Surface Duo 3. The same type of device as the Surface Duo 1 and 2 has reportedly been canceled.
It is possible that a Microsoft device under the Surface Duo 3 brand will appear at some point. But the Surface Duo form factor, a device with two screens and a 360-degree hinge, is no longer planned. Microsoft is now working on “a more traditional folding design, with a 180-degree hinge, an inner folding screen and an outer cover” – just like the Galaxy Fold.
The Surface Duo line was not the most convenient among Android devices. Instead of the tall, thin displays that Android smartphones typically use, both Surface Duos used short, wide displays. This made the Duo line the widest smartphones on the market. The original Surface Duo was slated to run Windows 10x, which would take advantage of the screen’s aspect ratio. When this OS was canceled, the project was transferred to Android, but due to the unusual aspect ratio of the display, Android applications did not look the best on the Surface Duo. In addition, even when folded, such a device is significantly wider than any other smartphone on the market, and it is literally uncomfortable to hold with one hand.
After two almost identical versions of the Surface Duo, Microsoft decided to change the design. It is noted that the canceled Surface Duo 3 would have “narrower and taller displays from edge to edge”, which would make the smartphone more comfortable. But even these plans were ultimately abandoned. Now Microsoft’s third-generation Duo is seen internally as a more conventional foldable smartphone, and it’s unclear if it will be called the Surface Duo 3. It’s also unclear when to expect it to hit the market, as there’s no specific window for the device to ship yet. It is unlikely that it will be ready this fall.
