Microsoft Corporation has announced that it will soon add OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial intelligence to its Azure cloud service. The company is considering significantly increasing its stake in OpenAI.
The software giant announced the general availability of the Azure service, which has been available to a limited number of customers since its introduction in 2021. The service will give Microsoft cloud customers access to various OpenAI tools, such as the GPT-3.5 language system on which ChatGPT is based, as well as the Dall-E tool for generating images from text clues. This allows Azure customers to use OpenAI products in their own cloud-based applications.
According to insiders, Microsoft is in talks to invest $10 billion in OpenAI. The deal calls for the company to contribute funds over several years, though the final terms could change. The potential investment could value OpenAI at approximately $29 billion.
Microsoft is already an OpenAI partner thanks to an investment of $1 billion in 2019. The company is looking to gain an edge in artificial intelligence systems to improve its own products to compete with Google, Amazon and Meta.

II ChatGPT “blow up” the Internet after its launch in late November, gathering the first million users in less than a week. Its imitation of human conversation has sparked rumors of AI’s ability to displace professional writers and even threaten Google’s core search business. The organization behind it, co-founded by Elon Musk and Silicon Valley investor Sam Altman, makes money by charging developers a fee to license its technology.
Concerns about ChatGPT’s lack of accuracy led to caution over its premature use, and New York City schools banned their students from using ChatGPT. According to Altman, the accuracy really isn’t good enough for the bot to be trusted.
Microsoft is currently using Codex OpenAI to automate its GitHub division’s Copilot programming tool, and is adding this functionality to Azure along with other OpenAI tools. The company wants to bring even more OpenAI technology to its Bing search engine, productivity office apps, Teams communication app, and security software.
