Bard is Google's answer to the ChatGPT chatbot. It is based on the LaMDA neurogenerative model

OpenAI’s automated text generation system ChatGPT has attracted public attention for its ability to produce naturalistic prose. But this system did not last long. Google has announced that its long-rumored AI-powered chatbot project is actually real and in the works. It’s called Bard. The company will provide more detailed information about it next Wednesday during the Google Presents event in Paris.

Bard will serve as an “experimental AI service,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post. Bard is built on top of Google’s existing Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) platform, which the company has been developing for the past two years.

“Bard aims to combine the breadth of global knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our great language models,” Pichai said. “It uses information from the Internet to provide natural and qualitative answers.”

The program will not be open for sharing over the Internet like ChatGPT. Google is starting with the launch of a lightweight version of LaMDA, which has more modest system requirements compared to its full counterparts. A small select group of trusted users will have access to it. Access scaling is possible only in the future.

“We will combine external feedback with our own internal testing to ensure that Bard’s responses meet a high standard of quality, security and real-world validity,” Pichai said. “We are excited about this phase of testing, which will help us continue to learn and improve the quality and speed of Bard.”

Communication with Internet users is just another step in Google’s larger program of mechanizing artificial intelligence. Pichai notes that as user searches become more complex and detailed, “you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that will transform complex information and different perspectives into easy-to-understand formats so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the Internet.” He added that such features will soon be available to users. Additionally, next month, select developers will be invited to explore a commercial API that runs on top of LaMDA – the Generative Language API.
