Google CEO Sundar Picha wrote a memo urging all employees to join Bard’s active testing. He also noted that the company will soon attract partners to test the API, which allows other developers to program applications based on Google’s AI technology.
On Monday, Pichai publicly announced Google’s own chatbot called Bard, which it plans to roll out in the coming weeks. Bard is built on Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) platform, the very technology in which a former company engineer allegedly discovered signs of consciousness.
Google has faced pressure from investors and employees amid the popularity of ChatGPT, an AI realistic text generator developed by OpenAI. Microsoft actively supports the startup and from rumors, invests billions of dollars in it, and integrates the chatbot with its own Bing search engine already in March.
“Next week, we’ll be getting every Google employee to help shape Bard and test the internal version. We look forward to all your feedback — more details will be coming soon,” Pichai wrote in an email to employees, seen by CNBC.
The term “internal version” in companies refers to the practice of using one’s own product before launch. Pichai also added that Google Search chief Prabhakar Raghavan will “share progress” at an event in Paris later this week (Microsoft will also soon host its own event with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman).

Google’s CEO previously wrote in a blog that Bard must undergo a thorough review to meet “the high bar of quality, security and validity of real-world information.”
“We have a lot of hard and exciting work ahead of us to integrate these technologies into our products and continue to use the best of Google Al to improve people’s lives. We approached this work with an intensity and focus that reminds me of the early years of Google — so thank you to everyone who contributed,” Pichai wrote.
In the future, Google will allow third-party developers to build their own apps and products using the same underlying LaMDA technology via an API.
“Next month, we will begin engaging individual developers, creators, and enterprises to test the generative language APIs initially built on top of LaMDA, with a number of role models. Over time, our goal is to create a set of tools and APIs that will make it easier for others to create innovative applications with AI,” Pichai added.
