Netflix has no plans to make a 3rd season of Mindhunter - David Fincher

David Fincher Says Netflix Has No Plans To Make A Mindhunter Season 3 Fans were desperately hoping for a new installment of the thriller after the release of the second season in August 2019, but it seems their hopes were in vain.

The filmmaker announced the disappointing news in an interview with the French publication Le Journal du Dimanche:

“I’m proud of the first two seasons, but it’s a very expensive show, and in Netflix’s eyes, we didn’t attract a large enough audience to justify that kind of investment,” Fincher said.

The premiere of “Mindhunter”, based on the documentary book “Mindhunter. Mark Olshaker and John Douglas’ FBI Special Unit for the Investigation of Serial Murders premiered on Netflix in 2017. The series follows the work of FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McKellaney), who created a unit that studies the behavior of serial maniacs. The Last Of Us star Anna Torv plays their colleague Wendy Carr, a psychology professor at Boston University. The events take place in the 1970s and mark the beginning of criminal profiling.

During the first two seasons of the show, the trio interviews the likes of Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton), Jerry Brudos (Happy Anderson), Wayne Williams (Christopher Livingston) and Charles Manson (Damon Herriman). Several episodes also referenced the crimes of “BTK Killer” Dennis Rader, leading many viewers to speculate that the team would catch him in future installments.

In August 2022, director Andrew Dominik told Collider that Mindhunter season 3 would likely focus on the behavioral science department sharing its research with a group of well-known filmmakers.

“What they were going to do was go to Hollywood. One was going to get in touch with Jonathan Demme, and the other with Michael Mann,” Dominic said.

Although the series was created by Joe Penhall, Fincher worked as an executive producer alongside Charlize Theron. He was often referred to as the de facto showrunner, overseeing scripts and production decisions; he also directed 7 of the 19 episodes.
