Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

One of the most popular genres of modern cinema is science fiction. It is viewed by millions of viewers, but only a few notice the absurdity of things that are happening there. Cinema in this genre often departs from scientific principles, because most screenwriters do not have a basic understanding of the laws of nature. Hollywood masters also deliberately make casual content for a mass audience, distort logic and science.

This is exactly what we will talk about in this article. Let’s consider several popular films in the Sci-Fi genre and show that children’s fairy tales about Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Riding Hood and Little Red Riding Hood look like documentary projects based on real events.

Methodology of film selection

We are not going to look for small blunders of screenwriters, but we will take into account the most important facts. For example, the lack of logic in the central plot lines. And, of course, we will consider numerous violations of the laws of physics.

The most important criterion for selecting films is an inadequate core of the story. That is, something too absurd, around which all events take place. The main problem of this kind of film is the connection of the plot.

“Star Troopers”Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

A legendary film illustrating the war of humanity against giant insects (arachnids). It would seem that what can you cling to in this wonderful movie? After all, there is an absurd beginning of the conflict.

Briefly about the plot: bugs of huge sizes release plasma charges from their bottoms (literally) from the surface of the planet into orbit. It turns out something like asteroids for enemies.Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

Therefore, we have the following facts:

  • The beetles calculated the trajectory so as to hit the asteroid at a certain angle.
  • The asteroid began to move in the right direction (to Earth).
  • This shot added enough momentum to the asteroid to accelerate and reach Earth.
  • An asteroid flies to Earth and destroys a large metropolis, which provokes people to attack bugs.

All this sounds so stupid, as if the script was written by a 5-year-old. A cosmic rock fragment from the nearest star to Earth would fly for too long. The movie doesn’t say how far away the arachnid planet is.Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

For example, the nearest star Proxima Centauri is 4+ light years from the Sun. The average speed of asteroids is 18–20 km/s. To fly 300,000 km (1 second of flight at the speed of light), an asteroid needs more than four hours. It would fly several tens or hundreds of thousands of years from the nearest star, not to mention more distant ones.

In addition, it would be seen a few years before approaching to a critically dangerous distance to the Earth. And how it was possible to accurately calculate the trajectory, you can not mention. The film mocks the laws of physics and looks like a fairy tale for an undemanding audience that never asks questions of realism and authenticity.

The fact that with this level of technological development almost the entire land army of the Earth consists of light infantry is also surprising. Apparently, the screenwriters had to give every chance to the bugs and make the audience feel sorry for the poorly protected main characters.

There are still many small nuances in this film, but the most shocking thing is the stupid beginning of the war between bugs and people.

“Pacific Rim”Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

A hundred years ago, Japanese films about Godzilla were popular. The fashion for such creatures remained and in 2013 the world saw another fairy tale that mocks the laws of physics and common sense.

Briefly about the plot: a mythical rift appeared in the Pacific Ocean, through which huge creatures from another dimension came to Earth.

In fact, we have the following:

  • People never thought to destroy monsters immediately after their appearance.
  • Humanity has unlearned how to use military equipment (it’s funny to see how an F-22 Raptor crashes into the body of monsters).
  • Everyone has forgotten about nuclear weapons and the screenwriters consider them ineffective.
  • But humanity decided to create huge and hideous robots that fight with their fists.

Physics in this film threw the audience forever, so the picture is not science fiction, but a comedy. To begin with, the whole plot seems completely nonsensical in a world where there is such a thing as nuclear weapons.

Tales where a living organism (of any size) can withstand a direct hit by a nuclear warhead are as absurd as gunfights in Indian (or African) action films.

Why focus on nuclear weapons? All because with her presence there would be no point in creating these walking cans that punch monsters with their fists.Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

The temperature at the epicenter of a nuclear explosion is a million degrees Celsius. The radius of damage (“sphere of fire”) with a megaton charge is 2 kilometers. Such a warhead decomposes living and non-living materials into atoms, destroying the structure at the molecular level. Carbon molecules would just fly off any Kaiju, but not in the movie. Here they are vulnerable only to iron boxers.Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

For the cinema, metal hands hitting sloppy cans look better. If the monsters die from conventional weapons and hand-to-hand combat, then a nuclear warhead of the lowest power (several kilotons) would destroy any “Kaiju” in an instant.

This immediately destroys the entire concept and plot of the film. Giant robots are the most stupid weapons that can be invented. The main plot is written by or for children. Who would be interested in watching the regular explosions near the rift and watching the death of hundreds of monsters that only seconds after they came out of their hole?

You can still cling to small details for a long time: unrealistic strength of metal structures, lack of intelligence, building a selfless wall and completely ignoring other effective weapons.

Jurassic World 3: Dominion 2022Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

The plot of this fantastic film is also difficult to perceive adequately. The screenwriters were guided only by the desire to profit from a well-known franchise and invented a primitive chain of events on their knees.

Briefly about the plot: after the eruption of a volcano on the island of Nublar, dinosaurs freely roam the Earth, causing ecological disasters.

In fact, it has the following:

  • Dinosaurs spread through all ecosystems (also with cold climates).
  • People with a lot of firearms and other weapons can’t do anything about it.

Not only physics teachers, but also biology and geography teachers cry from this film. Cold-blooded creatures depend on the temperature of the environment. This is especially true for large reptiles. Such creatures are not able to maintain their body temperature on their own, as mammals or birds do.

Lizards heat their bodies thanks to the sun’s rays and are afraid of cool conditions. Therefore, the Nile crocodiles will die in the Dniester, although this does not apply to the dinosaurs in the fairy-tale film.Non-Scientific Science Fiction - Popular Sci-Fi Movies Without Logic and Common Sense (Part 1)

While firearms exist on Earth, humanity is not threatened by any organisms of the macroworld. The screenwriters do not explain how primitive creatures managed to suppress human civilization in such a way. A single shot from the BMG 50 will go through the skull of any Jurassic predator. There is no need to talk about heavier weapons – no chance.

In fact, hunters would exterminate such dinosaurs with incredible enthusiasm in a matter of hours. Conservationists were forced to save these poor and defenseless creatures by keeping them in nature reserves. For the sake of epicness and fabulousness, the plot swallowed logic. The film feeds the audience with an absolute level of absurdity. This is just a fairy tale, because there is almost nothing left of science fiction here.

Conclusions

Science fiction films are rarely realistic, but when the main plot is absurd, it cannot be overlooked by an attentive viewer. The stupid ideas of the writers do not make these films worse, because most people do not think about logic and physics while watching. The most important thing is that the film has a great box office and the rest takes a back seat.
