1 in 5 American teenagers use video platforms “almost constantly.”
According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, YouTube is currently the most popular platform among US teenagers, with about 93% of respondents saying they visit the service regularly, while 16% of them are there “almost all the time”.
TikTok was in the second most popular place – 63% of teenagers use the ByteDance app (and about 17% do it “almost constantly”). Snapchat and Instagram have 60% and 50% respectively, while Facebook and Twitter (now X) are losing their young audience.
The share of teenagers using Facebook “has fallen from 71% in 2014-2015 to 33% today.”
The researchers note that teenage girls are more likely to use apps like BeReal, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook, while boys are more focused on video game-oriented messaging and social apps like Discord and Twitch.
“The share of teenagers using these platforms has remained relatively stable since the spring of 2022, when the Center last conducted surveys on these topics,” the authors write. “For example, the percentage of teenagers using TikTok has not changed statistically since last year.”
The Pew Research survey was based on responses from nearly 1,500 13- to 17-year-olds and was conducted between September 26 and October 23, 2023.
