For the first time, Netflix published viewing statistics for the entire catalog – the list includes everything that was released in the first half of 2023 and was watched for at least 50 thousand hours. A total of 18,214 movies and TV shows made it to the report, accounting for 99% of all views.
In the first half of the year alone, Netflix received more than 93 billion hours of viewing, so the total annual figure is likely to reach 200 billion hours. More than 3,800+ titles have just under 100k hours watched each, while 10,000+ titles have watched at least 1 million hours.
55% of Netflix viewing comes from original movies and series, and 45% from licensed titles.
The political thriller “Night Agent” (by the way, it has a Ukrainian audio track) became the most popular series in the first half of the year, receiving 812 million hours of views. It was followed by Ginny and Georgia with 665.1 million hours, the first season of Glory with 622.8 million hours, Wednesday with 507.7 million hours and Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story with 503 million hours views
In the past, Netflix has often been criticized for not being transparent about the performance of content on its platform, since all the top streaming is effectively at its own discretion (although the company noted that the current popular lists match the full data, with more than 60% of titles in the first half of the year in one way or another TOP 10). Access to the “black box” became possible after the screenwriters’ strike in Hollywood, because now their salaries will depend on this data.
In the future, the company plans to publish similar reports every six months.
