Netflix has released the first (and very short) teaser for the sci-fi drama The Astronaut, which stars Adam Sandler as an astronaut who encounters a mysterious alien creature called Ganush (voiced by Paul Dano) during a research mission in space.
Sandler is continuing his partnership with Netflix following the success of the coming-of-age comedy And Don’t Think of Coming to My Bat Mitzvah, which starred him and his daughters.
During six months of a lonely research mission at the edge of the solar system, astronaut Yakub realizes that his wife may not be waiting for him on Earth. He is helped to figure out his relationship by a strange, mysterious creature he finds on his ship,” reads the official synopsis.
The film, based on the 2017 novel The Astronaut of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfarz, was directed by Johan Rank (Chernobyl) and written by Colby Day.
The film also stars Carey Mulligan (Girlfriend), Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), Elena Olin (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).
In a post on the Netflix blog, Rank commented on Sandler’s future acting work:
“I wanted his performance to have nothing to do with the Adam Sandler that everyone knows. While he may be cute and funny and all that on the surface, he’s really very smart and deep.”
