Since its debut on December 22, the film has garnered 23.9 million views and topped Netflix’s weekly English-language movie chart.
To make it to the top 10 Netflix movies, “Running Moon, Part 1: Child of Fire” has to surpass “Evacuation 2”, which received just under 135 million views since its premiere.
Snyder’s main competitor, Sam Esmail’s apocalyptic thriller “Leave the World Behind,” is also slowly moving toward the top list, with 19.7 million views last week and a total of more than 100 million views in its first three weeks.
Also in the top 10 last week were Chicken Coop: Dawn of the Nuggets with 14.9 million views, Super Mario Bros. at the Movies with 7.9 million views, Adam Sandler’s animated comedy Leo with 7.2 million .views and “Family Sharing” with 6.4 million views.
Among series, My Life with the Walters leads for the second week in a row (+7.6 million last week), followed by the sixth and final season of The Crown (+5.7 million views).
Meanwhile, Full Moon Part 1: Child of Fire has received extremely poor reviews from critics, currently sitting at just 24% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 134 reviews.
The second part of the cosmic saga, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scar Giver, will be released on Netflix on April 19, 2024.
- According to the plot of the film, after a crash landing on the moon somewhere on the edge of the universe, Cora, a stranger with a mysterious past, starts a new life in a peaceful farming settlement. However, she soon becomes his only hope when the tyrannical regent Balisarius learns that the locals accidentally sold their crops to the Bloody Axes, the leaders of an inveterate rebel group. With a mission to find fighters willing to risk their lives for the people of the Veldt, Cora travels to different planets.
- “Rebel Moon” was conceived by Snyder more than a decade ago — originally as part of the “Star Wars” franchise, presented by the Lucasfilm director in the period between the completion of the prequel trilogy in 2005 and the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012. The story was later adapted by producer Eric Newman and Snyder himself, first as an original television series and then as a feature film.
- In hindsight, Rebel Moon was slated to be one of Netflix’s biggest films, if not its biggest. With a combined budget between the two parts of $166 million, Snyder enlisted a high-profile cast to realize his vision: Sofia Boutella as Cora, Fra Phi as Balisarius, Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim), Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) “), Ed Skrein and Michiel Hausman from “Game of Thrones”, Djimon Hounsou (“Shazam!”) and others. Even Anthony Hopkins appears as the voice of the mechanical knight fighting alongside Cora.
