Intel today announced a full line of 14th generation processors for mobile and desktop computing, including the latest HX series mobile processors, which will be the foundation of gaming laptops in 2024. Not to be confused with Intel Core Ultra notebook processors, the 14th generation variants are upgrades to the 13th generation Raptor Lake mobile versions.

The flagship Intel Core i9-14900HX will come in more demanding gaming laptops, equipped with 24 cores (eight performance cores and 16 efficiency cores) and Turbo Boost up to 5.8 GHz. These new chips also support up to 192 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM, as well as discrete Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and Thunderbolt 5, reports The Verge.

As in the desktop versions, Intel increases the number of cores in the Core i7 variant. The Core i7-14700HX now comes with 20 cores (eight performance cores and 12 efficiency cores). That’s four more performance cores than the 13th generation Core i7 model, and should improve the performance of multi-threaded applications and games.

Intel decided to pit its latest Core i9-14900HX against AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX, AMD’s first mobile processor with 3D V-Cache. At 1080p, the i9-14900HX beats the 7945HX in most of Intel’s benchmarks, with the exception of Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Intel didn’t offer any comparisons with the 13th generation chips.

Intel is also launching 14th generation mainstream desktop processors. Eighteen new processors will be available, including the $549 flagship Core i9-14900 processor with 24 cores (eight performance/16 efficiency). These are less energy-consuming desktop processors of the 14th generation, operating at a base power of 65 W, while the Core i9 model consumes up to 219 W.

Like the K variant, the Core i7-14700 has 20 cores (8 productive/12 efficient). The top-of-the-line Core i5, i7, and i9 chips support up to DDR5-5600 and 192GB of memory, and are all compatible with current Intel 600- and 700-series motherboards.
