Scott, known for the role of Moriarty in the series “Sherlock”, this time will embody the image of Tom Ripley – the main character of Patricia Highsmith’s psychological detectives on the screen.
“Polite, attractive, amoral and a serial killer with a passion for art” – this is how Highsmith described her character, dedicating five novels to him. The first was adapted in 1999 by director Anthony Minghella and starred Matt Damon and received five Oscar nominations, while the current version (from Showtime, which later sold the series to Netflix) covers the entire series at once.
The story of Ripley, who initially appears in the role of a small-time crook from New York, begins with an acquaintance with a rich shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf, who accidentally mistakes Tom for a Princeton acquaintance of his son Dickie. Later, at Herbert’s request, Ripley travels to Italy to convince Dickie to return to the US and join the family business. Further events and Tom’s attraction to the luxurious life eventually lead to the first murder in this story.
In the bleak black-and-white teaser, characters keep repeating Ripley’s name — and interestingly, John Malkovich, who played Tom in another film adaptation, the 2002 drama thriller The Ripley’s Game, makes an appearance.
The director and screenwriter of “Ripley” is Steven Zaillian, who wrote the screenplay for “The Irishman” by Martin Scorsese, and was also awarded an Oscar for the screenplay of “Schindler’s List.”
Joining the cast were Johnny Flynn, who played Dickie Greenleaf, and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood (in the 1999 version, Greenleaf was played by Jude Law and his girlfriend by Gwyneth Paltrow).
“Ripley” consists of 8 episodes, all debuting simultaneously on Netflix on April 4.
