Work “calls” can become a little more fun, because they will take place in a virtual space with avatars instead of the usual images of colleagues.

Although companies are increasingly urging employees to return to the office, Microsoft is offering to try a new type of “hybrid” work. The company announced the launch of Microsoft Mesh, a feature that works through Microsoft Teams and allows avatars of employees to meet in the same virtual place, even if the people are actually in different places.

Microsoft Teams goes 3D - with avatars and meetings in virtual reality

At the same time, it is not necessary to use a headset for the VR experience in Teams – Microsoft has built in a 2D version (in this case, people are displayed as images from webcams). The company also uses spatial audio and sound zones, so multiple people can communicate in the same space at the same time without disturbing each other. And it’s great for more natural conversations that aren’t always possible during video conferencing.

Microsoft has previously tested Mesh at companies such as consulting firm Accenture and pharmaceutical company Takeda – the CTO of the latter said that meetings became “more intimate and exciting”.

Mesh offers a series of ready-made spaces that companies can customize (e.g. add logos), tools can be accessed through the Microsoft Unity platform for 2D and 3D development.

Mesh is currently only available on desktop PCs and Meta Quest VR devices. Microsoft offers a free 6-month trial to anyone with a business plan in Microsoft 365 or Teams. Otherwise, prices range from $4 per user per month for Microsoft Teams Essentials to $57 per user per month for Microsoft 365 E5.
