TikTok CEO urges US users to ‘protect their constitutional rights’ (and the platform)

Shortly after the US House of Representatives banned TikTok, the company’s CEO, Shou Chu, urged users to “protect their constitutional rights.” Chu also hinted that TikTok would file a legal action if the bill is finally passed.

“We will not stop fighting and protecting you,” Chu said in a video posted on X (Twitter). “We will continue to do everything we can, including exercising our legal rights, to protect this great platform we’ve built with you.”

He also asked TikTok users in the US to share their stories with friends, families and senators.

“This bill, if it becomes law, will ban TikTok in the United States,” Chu said. “Even the authors of the bill admit that this is their goal.”

The bill, known as the Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act, passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support just days after it was introduced. If the bill is finally passed, it would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell TikTok to a US company within 6 months or bar access to app stores and web hosting in the US.

In his address, Chu said banning TikTok would give “more power to several other social media companies.”

TikTok has previously contested state-level bans. Last year, TikTok sued Montana, which banned the app in the state. A federal judge temporarily blocked that ban in November before it could take effect.

Last week, TikTok sent a push notification to more than 170 million users of the app in the US, urging them to call their representatives about the potential ban. The flurry of reports led to House staff being inundated with calls from high school students asking what a “congressman” was. Lawmakers criticized the company, which they said was trying to interfere with the legislative process.
