A digital release date will be announced later.
The new deal between Netflix, Goodfellas and GKIDS expands Japan’s Studio Ghibli’s catalog of streaming titles, including Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated feature, The Boy and the Heron, which is up for this year’s Oscars 2024.
The film’s Netflix release date is still unknown, but Deadline reports that it will be available in most countries around the world (excluding Japan and the US).
The deal covers an additional 22 films that will continue to be available for streaming — including Ghostbusters, Princess Mononoke, Arietti’s Catcher, Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Young Witch, My Neighbor Totoro, The Tale of Princess Kaguya ” and other.
For residents of Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America, the above movies are available dubbed in 20 languages and subtitled in 28 languages.
“The Boy and the Heron” is Miyazaki’s first feature film in the last 10 years. The film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and grossed over $167 million worldwide. This is already the third statuette for Hayao – in 2001, his film “Ghosts” won in the animation category, and in 2014, Miyazaki himself received the director’s award.
The semi-autobiographical story, written and directed by Miyazaki, follows a 12-year-old boy, Mahito Maki, who moves in with his aunt in a remote country house after his mother dies during the war. Eventually, he meets a heron who takes him to a fantastic “wonderland”. The music for the cartoon was created by Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi, and the English version of “The Boy and the Heron” was voiced by Christian Bale, Florence Pugh and Robert Pattinson.
