Microsoft will end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023 - they will no longer receive security updates

As of January 10, Microsoft will stop providing security updates and technical support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. Microsoft Edge browser stopped supporting these OSes a week earlier. Microsoft Edge version 109 is the last version that supports legacy operating systems.

Other software solutions are also ending support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Last October, Google announced that on February 7, the Chrome browser would end support for these operating systems. While both browsers will continue to work on devices running these operating systems, they will not receive future critical security updates or new features. Support for WebView2, a tool that allows developers to embed web content into their applications, is also ending on January 10.

Given the end of support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and the lack of future security updates for them, it is recommended that you install the more recent Windows 10 or 11 OS on your systems. But if this is not possible, Microsoft recommends that you replace your device with a new one before January 10 to avoid possible security issues .

According to StatCounter, as of December 2022, the total share of these OSes was about 14%, which is quite significant – at the beginning of 2022, more than 1.4 billion monthly active devices were running Windows.
