Paris and Rome accepted Kyiv’s application for the SAMP/T Mamba air defense systems developed by the MBDA and Thales concerns. It is Italy that should install one of its systems, according to Etienne de Ponsin, the French ambassador to Ukraine. At the same time, France will provide the appropriate funds for the radar.
The last difficulties that hindered the supply of the SAMP/T Mamba air defense system to Ukraine seem to have been overcome. According to Etienne de Ponsin, the French ambassador to Ukraine, everything is now ready for the dispatch of this medium-range system developed by MBDA and Thales as part of the Eurosam joint venture.
“France and Italy will provide Ukraine with the requested air defense equipment,” Etienne de Ponsin confirmed. — This is a very persistent request of President Zelensky, and the Italians have confirmed to us that they are ready to fulfill it. That way, we can meet their needs.”
The supply of SAMP/T was already mentioned by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov, in an interview with Le Monde on December 9:
“We are asking for SAMP/T and the Franco-Italian Mamba system,” he explained. “The French side reacted positively to our request, but the negotiations with the Italian side have not yet been completed.”
Thus, it appears that this last hurdle has been overcome. The SAMP/T system will join the air defense systems already delivered to Ukraine: the German IRIS-T, the Norwegian-American NASAMS, transferred to the USA, the Italian Aspide, delivered by Spain. France is a major supplier of air defense systems and MLRS to Ukraine: during the fall, Crotale air defense systems and at least four LRU installations, analogues of the M270, were delivered.

The Mamba air defense system is designed to protect ground objects from all types of air threats, including cruise missiles and short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. The system is designed to counter obstacles and means of radio-electronic warfare.
The complex includes Thompson-CSF ARABEL radar stations,
command module with real-time control systems, self-propelled launchers for 8 missiles and Aster-30 missiles in transport-launch containers.
The Mamba system hits aircraft at a distance of 3 km. up to 100 km. and ballistic missiles with a range of 3-35 km, flying at an altitude of up to 25 km. The rocket’s flight speed reaches 1400 m/s, with a total mass of 510 kg, the rocket carries 15-25 kg of warheads.
