New package of EU laws will completely destroy the whole essence of iOS?

Recently, the EU passed a law that requires manufacturers to use the USB-C standard for charging and data transfer. The document applies to everyone, but Apple, which historically uses Lightning, will feel it most strongly. Now the “Yabloko” are preparing to receive another serious blow. The EU has taken up digital regulation and adopted a package of laws designed to streamline the digital services provided by large companies and ensure the rights of all users in the European market. The delicate point is that the new provisions completely contradict the essence and logic of iOS and threaten its existence in the form in which it is here and now. Judge for yourself, the new norms of EU law include the following requirements:

  • the ability to install applications from third-party stores and directly from the Internet;
  • the ability to use third-party payment systems at the level of software developers ( in Korea, this has already been introduced );
  • the ability to integrate third-party applications and services into the OS (in other words, the ability to use a third-party dialer or messenger instead of the standard ones), as well as replacing the standard voice assistant;
  • the ability to remove pre-installed software;
  • the ability to access the hardware systems of gadgets, including NFC and even the central processor, biometric systems and software tied to them;
  • open mode of access to information of competitors, including in terms of marketing effectiveness.
Новый пакет законов ЕС полностью уничтожит iOS?

With the new law, companies will be required to abandon the policy of prioritizing their own services, default applications, and so on, so it will also hit Google significantly, although not comparable to Apple. For non-compliance with the requirements, a fine of 10 to 20% of annual revenue is provided. There are no comments from Yabloko yet, but the company has previously had a conflict with the authorities of the Netherlands due to issues of means of payment in a number of third-party applications. If everything is confirmed, in the near future iOS may take the form of macOS, which takes into account some of these requirements. We are on the threshold of big changes, friends!
