The global smartphone market continues to fall: report for Q2 2022

The global mobile market in the first quarter of 2022 was remembered for a fall of 11%, which was caused by economic and political uncertainty on the global stage. The situation has not changed in the second quarter: a recent report by Canalys researchers indicates a drop in global smartphone shipments by 9% year on year. At the same time, in comparison with the indicators of Q2 2021, when about 320 million devices were shipped, the situation looks even more dramatic: this time about 280 million smartphones were sold.

Compared to Q1 2022, there were no reshuffles in the top five market, however, both Samsung and Apple showed a decrease (from 24 to 21% for Koreans and from 18 to 17% for Americans), while Chinese brands are growing or at least do not fall: Xiaomi and Vivo added 1% each (14 and 9% respectively), while OPPO retained a 10% share of the global market. But relative to Q2 2022, the situation is different: the Chinese have a total drawdown and +3% each for Apple and Samsung.

The researchers conclude that sluggish demand and stockpiling will prompt companies to rethink sales plans and strategies, which could translate into attractive offers and promotions closer to the holiday season at the end of the year.
