The Dutch publication GalaxyClub has discovered that Samsung has filed a trademark application for Hexa²pixel. Of course, while there are no official details about what the Koreans plan to call “squared six-pixel”, but the answer to this question can give the official characteristics of the Samsung HP1 sensor. The name Tetra²pixel flashed there – this is how the structure of the color filter was designated, in which a 4×4 pixel square is covered with one color, that is, 16-in-1 binning works. Another name for this technology – Hexadeca Bayer – did not really take root.

And if Tetra²pixel is a technology that turns a 4×4 square into one color pixel, then Hexa²pixel obviously operates on a 6×6 square. That means 36-in-1 binning! Such a large color filter, of course, will require a huge number of pixels to get a decent output resolution, because even a 108-megapixel camera with Hexa²pixel takes photos of only 3 megapixels. For example, for pictures with a classic resolution of 12 megapixels, a 432-megapixel sensor is needed! At the same time, the practical benefit of further increasing the color filter cells is unclear. Let’s see how Samsung will explain this direction of development of its cameras.
