Despite everything, the market for foldable smartphones is growing and developing. And although Samsung is its undoubted leader in terms of sales, it would not be superfluous to find out the dynamics of the market and the balance of power for specific models, of which this year has become noticeably larger due to the first models of Vivo, OPPO and others. To answer these questions, DSCC specialists led by Ross Young decided to analyze the world’s display supply chains. In the first quarter of 2022, shipments of foldable smartphones soared an incredible 571% year-on-year to 2.22 million units, according to the report. Which, however, is 47% less than it was in the record fourth quarter of 2021 (4.2 million).
Samsung continued to dominate, but with a significant drop in market share to 74%. Most of its clientele flowed into the hands of Huawei, which released the unexpectedly successful P50 Pocket and occupied 20% of the market due to this. OPPO showed a small increase, but neither it nor other brands took more than 2% of the market. Speaking of specific models, Galaxy Z Flip 3 remains the undisputed leader for the third quarter in a row with a share of 51%. Galaxy Z Fold 3 follows with a noticeable lag (22%), but the very rapidly gaining popularity Huawei P50 Pocket (19%) is already breathing down its back. By the way, these three models account for 91% of the foldable smartphone market. At the same time, neither OPPO Find N , nor Vivo X Fold , nor Xiaomi Mix Fold have yet managed to overcome the bar of 2.5% of the market.
Summing up, Ross Young expects further explosive growth of the foldable smartphone market in 2022. He estimates shipments will increase by 107% to over 16 million units, with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 expected this summer to be the driving force behind this. Well, the chart below clearly illustrates the dynamics of the folding panels market from 2020 to 2022.
