Employees of the department for combating cybercrime, together with other law enforcement officers of the Lviv region, exposed a 37-year-old foreigner in illegal actions. A citizen of Bulgaria installed special skimming devices in ATM card readers to read user bank card data. The attacker also installed hidden video cameras that recorded the entry of PIN codes. According to preliminary data, the offender managed to read information from 57 bank cards of citizens.
Typically, such data is used to make duplicate cards and then withdraw cash from them. Law enforcers are checking the attacker for involvement in the fraudulent misappropriation of money. Police officers conducted a search at the residence of the person involved in the case. During the search, computer equipment was seized, where information about citizens’ bank cards, skimming equipment and metal plates with video cameras were stored.
The man declared suspicion under Part 5 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized intervention in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. For the offenses committed, he faces up to 15 years in prison. Investigations are ongoing.
In addition, the cyber police reminds that before using an ATM, you need to carefully inspect it, and when entering a PIN code, you should cover the keyboard with your hand.
