Toyota has unveiled a new home battery for residential backup power, a product that will compete with the Tesla Powerwall. After Tesla launched the Powerwall and Powerpack in 2015, several other automakers also decided to enter the home energy storage market. Toyota batteries are called O-Uchi Kyuden System.
“Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has developed batteries based on the concept of “safety, long life, high quality, good value for money and high performance” so that customers can use them with peace of mind. This technology, based on years of development of electrified vehicles and on-board parts and assemblies, has been used to create the O-Uchi Kyuden System for the home battery system. Pre-orders are open from today, and sales in Japan will begin in August through home builders and general construction companies,” the company said in a press release.
The nominal capacity of the Toyota battery system is 8.7 kWh and the rated power output is 5.5 kWh. The O-Uchi Kyuden system uses battery technology. Therefore, the power supply of the whole house will be stable even during a power outage caused by natural disasters.
The Toyota Backup System works with a bi-directional charger so it can be connected to an electric vehicle battery. Toyota is currently accepting pre-orders for the system only in Japan.
