Twitter co-founder and Block CEO Jack Dorsey has teamed up with musician Jay-Z (Sean Carter) to launch The Bitcoin Academy at Marcy Houses. This is the public housing complex in Brooklyn, New York where Jay-Z grew up.
The initiative aims to provide financial education with a focus on Bitcoin as a path to financial freedom. The Bitcoin Academy offers free in-person and online classes led by Lamar Wilson (operates content site Black Bitcoin Billionaire) and Naja J. Roberts (founder and CEO of event and education space Crypto Blockchain Plug). Training will take place twice a week from the end of June to September. At the same time, program participants will be provided with smartphones, MiFi devices and an annual tariff plan. In addition, there is even a weekend program for children.
“The simple goal is to provide people with the tools to become independent for themselves and then for the community around them,” Jay-Z tweeted.
The Bitcoin Academy is funded by personal contributions from Dorsey and Jay-Z. A spokesperson for The Bitcoin Academy said that participants will be given a small amount of bitcoins , but the project is for learning. The nature of the program will depend on who registers for it (for example, classes may be held in Spanish). The course will cover the basics of what a cryptocurrency is, how blockchain works, and how to detect fraud.
