Samsung fined $9.7 million for false Galaxy waterproof ad

The water resistance of smartphones has long been a headache for manufacturers: on the one hand, this is a convenient feature that fans love so much, and on the other hand, the resistance of gadgets to water has many limitations and reservations. Therefore, it is very important not to overdo it with high-profile advertising materials, as Samsung did in the period from 2016 to 2018, for which it will now be forced to pay a large fine. In Australia, the trial, which started back in 2019, has ended. In videos and posters of those years, Samsung showed that smartphones could be used in swimming pools and even sea water.

But, as you know, salt and chlorinated water, as well as hitting water, often cause water-resistant gadgets (smartphones, watches, action cameras) to drown. Such advertising, which “became the key criterion for choosing these particular Galaxy smartphones,” caused a fine of $ 9.7 million. A separate emphasis is placed on the fact that the situation only concerns advertising of older Galaxy models (A5, A7, S7, S8, Note 8) . But this does not mean that the new models have become more reliable – only the approach to advertising has changed, which has become more cautious.
