It has been revealed that the upcoming Montblanc Summit 3 watch will not only run Wear OS 3, but will also be the first smartwatch to run on the new unified iOS platform.
The Montblanc Summit 3 is not the first smartwatch to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus platform, but it will be the first to come with Wear OS 3 already installed. The fact that it also supports iOS is a big difference from other confirmed Wear OS 3 watches. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 line and the upcoming Google Pixel Watch are exclusively for Android users.
Smartwatches based on Wear OS 2 and Samsung Tizen work with iOS, although they are not very popular among iPhone owners. Wear OS 2 devices with the Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus chipset could be upgraded to Wear OS 3 later this year, though it’s unclear if they’ll still be compatible with iOS after the upgrade.
Montblanc Summit 3 will have a dedicated companion app for iOS and Android that will act as a “bridge between phone and watch”. However, iOS support doesn’t mean iPhone users will get the same Wear OS 3 experience as Android users.
“Our priority for Wear OS 3 is to focus on quality experiences within the Android ecosystem,” said Google spokesperson Ivy Chen Hunt. “Montblanc Summit 3 will run Wear OS 3 and will be iPhone compatible. However, app and feature support varies by phone platform.”
She also explained that Google provides support for iOS through some apps and services such as YouTube Music and notification mirroring. The company plans to expand support in the future.
As expected, the Montblanc Summit 3 smartwatch will be presented on July 15 and will go on sale for €1250.
Google confirms Wear OS 3 name – update will be released no earlier than the end of 2022 and only three models will receive it
