Remember how Pavel Durov accused Apple and Google of having a monopoly over their content distribution policies? So, in South Korea, they managed to challenge the Apple App Store. There, a law came into force that prohibits app stores from imposing their payment systems on apps. Apple was forced to comply and offer developers an alternative method for processing external StoreKit payments. Developers will continue to pay Apple a commission of 26% of the price, and are also required to submit product and content sales reports. However, traditional methods will also work, and with advantages – the request to buy and family access for external payment processing will not work due to the inability to verify such payments by Apple.
According to Korean media, Google has not complied with the requirements of the Korean legislator and requires all app developers to use its billing system and remove external payment links. This demand prompted the Publishers Association to petition the Korea Communications Commission to investigate the actions of the Good Corporation. Apple decided to avoid such adventures and obey the demands. Who knows, maybe other countries will take note of this approach.
