According to the results of a two-week poll on changing the Soviet symbols on the Motherland monument in Diya, which was initiated by the Ministry of Culture, 85% of Ukrainians voted to replace the coat of arms of the USSR with the State Emblem of Ukraine (Trident). In total, 778,218 Ukrainians took part in the survey, according to the Ministry of Digital Development.
Respondents could choose one of three options, and here are the results:
- 85% believe that the Soviet symbol should be replaced with a trident;
- 9% suggest simply removing the coat of arms of the USSR;
- 6% want to leave the symbols of the USSR on the shield.
The final decision on the Ukrainization of the monument will be made by the city authorities, and it is not yet known when this issue will be considered at all.
The Motherland monument is located on the right high bank of the Dnieper on the territory of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II. It was opened in 1981 and is considered the tallest sculpture in Europe. The total height of the monument with a pedestal is 102 meters. The first project was developed back in the 1970s by the sculptor Evgeny Vuchetich, but construction began much later – according to the project of the Ukrainian sculptor Vasily Boroday, who changed the original plan. At first it was assumed that a 90-meter gilded bronze figure of a woman would rise on the pedestal, and at the foot from a 30-meter height a waterfall was supposed to flow to the Dnieper, on both sides of which the soldiers would cross the river.
The monument in Kiev on the slopes of the Dnieper River has been around for more than four decades, but for many Kievans it has not become “their own” – in a recent interview with Radio Liberty, culturologist Maxim Strikha said that in the circles of the intelligentsia, even then, unofficially, dissatisfaction with a sculpture of such gigantic dimensions was an example of classical Soviet megalomania and monumentalism.
“I remember my own impressions of 1982, when it appeared – it was such a distortion of the landscape of Kyiv that it seems to me that neither an empty place on the shield, nor a trident will help this monument”

culturologist
In May-June, the Ministry of Digital Development and the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted an online survey in Diya on the circulation of firearms among the civilian population – more than 1.7 million Ukrainians took part in it, which was an absolute record, and 59% of respondents supported the idea .
- Online surveys in Diya appeared in early February 2022 . This is a new service for the development of e-democracy in the country, which has been tested with a limited circle of participants since the end of last year. A survey among users of “Diya” will help the authorities to find out the opinion of people, and the team – to develop new services. In the future, the Ministry of Digital Development plans to implement online elections . The Ministry of Digital Development has been tirelessly talking about the system of electronic elections, which will allow voting online, over the past few years – work in this direction has been ongoing since at least 2020.
