Ukrtelecom in the first half of 2022 ensured the operation of 87% of its network and received UAH 2.9 billion of income

Since the beginning of a full-scale war with the Russian aggressor and at the end of June, Ukrtelecom provides Internet access in 87% of the settlements of its national coverage. According to the results of work in the first half of 2022, the company received a total income of UAH 2.9 billion.

Due to the loss of control over part of the telecom infrastructure and the termination of the provision of services in the temporarily occupied territories, the total income in the first half of the year decreased by 15.6% compared to the same period of the previous pre-war year. Despite difficult conditions, the company maintains a high level of operational efficiency – EBITDA margin in the first half of 2022 was 24.3%.

Even under martial law, the company continues to grow its subscriber base and meet the demand for optical Internet connections. The total income from the provision of telecom services is more than UAH 2 billion. The number of optical Internet subscribers in the first half of the year increased to more than 290,000, which is almost 44% more than last year.

In June alone, about 8,000 households became subscribers of optical Internet from JSC Ukrtelecom, which is twice as many as in April. In addition to households, more than 160 social infrastructure facilities were connected to the high-speed optical Internet, including 131 medical and educational institutions, 29 territorial communities.

Unfortunately, aggressive military operations and the temporary occupation of certain territories by the Russian aggressor do not allow the company to take full advantage of the fiber-optic infrastructure built last year. Recall that in 2021, Ukrtelecom JSC laid more than 13.6 thousand kilometers of optical lines and deployed networks in 596 new settlements, which is the largest annual construction volume in the history of the company.

At the same time, as a result of the conduct of hostilities in the conditions of full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, as well as the intervention of invaders in the work of the company’s telecom network, control over the telecom infrastructure in almost 900 settlements of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Kharkiv and Kherson regions was lost. A preliminary estimate of the cost of destroyed buildings, lost equipment and other assets in the temporarily occupied territories, taking into account the lack of access for a thorough inspection and fixation, is more than UAH 450 million.

The company’s premises continue to be in demand. Commercial rental income in the first half of 2022 amounted to almost UAH 200 million, which is 7.7% less than in the same period last year. In addition to the loss of some properties due to the occupation and destruction caused by the fighting, the reduction in income was also affected by discounts provided to a number of clients in accordance with the situation in a certain territory.

In order to maintain the uninterrupted provision of communication services under martial law, a new network structure has been built with a high level of redundancy of key trunk lines and network core equipment. The capacity of external channels has almost tripled to 750 Gb / s. The repair teams of Ukrtelecom JSC work in coordination with the regional military administrations, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Special Communications Service, giving priority to services for defenders and socially important facilities.

During the full-scale war, Ukrtelecom, as a national operator, ensured the relocation of the telecom and IT infrastructure of a number of large companies to the western regions of Ukraine, providing them with high-capacity channels and building infrastructure to accommodate their data centers (data processing centers). A data center infrastructure was also built to host the resources of Ukrainian “cloud” providers.

In the first half of the year, the company paid more than UAH 750 million in taxes and fees to the budgets of all levels, allocated almost UAH 34 million in financial assistance for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and transferred more than 130 cars and dozens of premises to the disposal of our defenders. More than 300 employees of the company now serve in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
