Today on the review is a gaming novelty from Acer, which was planned to enter the market even before the war, but, like all other plans, it did not work out with the release of the laptop, and therefore a detailed analysis was released only now. A laptop with a 12th generation Intel i7 processor, fully powered RTX 3070 Ti, a 17.3 ”display with support for 165 Hz, 3ms response, very impressive dimensions and a price tag of $2860. Let’s consider the capabilities of the device on several gaming titles, test the display in detail and talk about the user experience.
Equipment
The laptop kit consists of only one element: a 330W charger. The memory is very impressive (the charge weighs 1 kg), but given the powerful hardware of the Acer Nitro 5, this is fully justified. Plus, the user is not limited to using only a native power supply and can recharge his laptop via a USB-C port.
The length of the complete wire is 180 cm, which will be enough for the vast majority of users.
Design and ergonomics
Let’s start with the fact that, together with a rather large memory, the total weight of the device reaches 4 kg, which, coupled with its impressive dimensions, makes the Acer Nitro 5 very conditionally transportable. Of course, it will not be difficult to move it from place to place, but there are few people who want to carry such a laptop with them on an ongoing basis.
The laptop looks like a typical representative of the gaming segment: a black case with chopped edges, a small touchpad and an RGB backlit keyboard. The body is made entirely of plastic. Of the unusual, one can note the white edging of the keys and the mother-of-pearl material of the touchpad and case.
Ports
The number of ports is not prohibitive, but the necessary minimum is met. On the right side is:
- 2xUSB-A 3.2 Gen 2 (one of which supports Power-off Charging)
On the left side:
- USB-A 3.2 Gen1
- 3.5mm audio jack
- RJ45 Ethernet
- Kensington lock
And on the back:
- Power port
- USB-C Thunderbolt 4
- HDMI 2.1 (supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR, VRR and G-sync monitors)
Perhaps we would like to see a couple more USB-C, but, apparently, the manufacturer considered that for the needs of gamers it is better to equip the laptop with the maximum number of Type-A ports.
Display
Diagonal IPS display Acer Nitro 5 is 17.3 inches with a QHD resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, the laptop supports scanning up to 165 Hz with a 3 ms response time. The screen has a matte finish with a quality anti-glare coating that handles well even in direct sunlight, but 300 nits of brightness is still too low for comfortable work outside the home or in a sun-drenched room.
The picture is contrasting, bright and detailed, which is especially noticeable while watching movies and working with graphics. The smoothness and detail of the display is also perfectly emphasized by the pre-installed Windows 11, which, after several updates, no longer causes such rejection as before, especially when paired with such a hertz.
Results of colorimetric tests:
Backlight Uniformity and Brightness:
Keyboard and touchpad
The keyboard is traditional for gaming laptops with high travel and a noticeable response. The distance between the keys is large, so it is convenient to play on it, but the set of documents and generally working with text is not as comfortable as on office machines, but this is a matter of habit and taste. In the presence of NumPad and a separate key to open the utility from Acer – Nitrosense to control and monitor all laptop systems, as well as activate the turbo mode for maximum productivity.
The 4-position adjustable RGB backlight is soft and even enough not to annoy you with its glow in the dark, even at maximum brightness.
The touchpad is responsive and takes up enough space for comfortable use, despite its modest dimensions. It is convenient to use it on an ongoing basis, which you do not expect when you first turn on the laptop, but still, for some more or less active actions, you want to connect a mouse.
Sound and camera
The sound is at a good level, low frequencies sound especially good, the dimensions of the case affect. It is convenient to play using the built-in acoustics, but still, for a comfortable game, it is better to use a headset, especially considering the volume at which the laptop makes noise when switching to the maximum cooler speeds. When listening to music, the upper and middle frequencies are illegible, but for TV shows and YouTube it will do.
The HD 720p camera is at an acceptable level for a laptop camera, but the quality leaves much to be desired – even in good daylight, the photo shows significant noise and color distortion, as you can see from the photo below.
Specifications
The Acer Nitro 5 review configuration is as follows: an Intel i7-12700H processor, an NVIDIA GeForce 3070 Ti graphics card, 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD of internal storage.
The dimensions of the device are 400.5×294.5×27.9 mm, and the laptop weighs 3 kg, excluding the weight of the charger.
Performance and software
Acer Nitro 5, running already noticeably finished Windows 11, flies under any load – I never managed to load it so much that it began to lag, within adequate tasks, but the pre-installed utilities from Acer periodically blunt – they do not start immediately and sometimes react very slowly to user actions. Simultaneous processing of photos in Lightroom, working with documents, listening to music through Spotify, 100 tabs in Google Chrome and God of War hanging in the background did not significantly affect the productivity of the device. Judging by the synthetics and the level of graphics, the laptop is perfect for video editing and working with 3D.
The results of synthetic tests are as follows:
- Geekbench 5 – 10399 multi-threaded and 1597 single-threaded
- Cinebench R23 – 11556 in multi-thread and 1718 in single-thread
Of the minuses, the constant work of coolers can be noted. Even while performing non-resource-intensive tasks, such as surfing the Internet or working with documents, the laptop turns on cooling, which is quite audible even at minimum speeds.
There are several pre-installed programs on board (both from Acer and from third-party developers):
- Planet9 Stub (For Gaming)
- Acer Care Center
- Acer Configuration Manager
- Acer Product Registration
- NitroSense
- Quick Access Security
- Norton™ Internet Security
- PC Manager
Games
God of War
One of the most beautiful games to date at ultra graphics settings used only 6GB of VRAM out of 8GB available. The laptop gave out a stable 60-70 FPS, depending on the load of the scene.
Elden Ring
Then came the relatively fresh Elden Ring, also replete with fine details and colorful landscapes. Stable 60 FPS with rare, but invisible to the eye, drawdowns up to 48 FPS at maximum settings. You can judge the quality of the graphics by the screenshots.
Doom: Eternal
The most active and demanding game in terms of the number of frames and response time from the tested. On ultra settings, the Acer Nitro 5 delivered a stable 100 FPS with drawdowns of up to 48 FPS in active sections. Playing shooters on a 165 Hz display with a 3ms response is a real pleasure. After such an experience, it is quite difficult to return to simple displays, so you begin to unwittingly include the purchase of a laptop with similar characteristics into your post-war plans.
autonomy
Autonomy indicators are at a high level, especially for a device with similar characteristics. To completely discharge the laptop, you need to spend about 4-7 hours behind it, depending on the load. During testing, the battery managed to last the longest 7 hours 38 minutes (web surfing and working with documents), which is a good indicator. And in 4 hours and 22 minutes, we managed to discharge the laptop when used under stress test conditions.
From 0% to 100% of the supplied charger, the laptop charges in an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes. By the way, Nitro 5 is powered by a USB-C Thunderbolt 4 connector, which is located next to the main charging port and supports power from 65W to 100W.
